Angels Sign Dustin Ackley to Minor League Deal (Giuseppe)

The Los Angeles Angels signed free agent infielder/outfielder Dustin Ackley to a minor league contract on Saturday. The team released the news via a Twitter Post on their official account. The deal also includes an invitation to Spring Training.

Here’s the news from the Angels:

The 28-year-old Ackley missed a majority of the 2016 season after undergoing surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder. Ackley has played in the Big Leagues for 6 years, playing a large majority of his career in Seattle until he was traded to the Yankees in 2015. Ackley did not, by any means, have a good 2015 that was split between the mariners and the Yankees, with a slash line of .231/.284/.429 in 264 plate appearances, and in 2016 he did even worse with a slash line of .148/.243/.148. In his career, Ackley has posted a .241/.304/.367 line over the first 2,347 plate appearances of his career.

He is obviously not a major offensive force, but on the positive side of Ackley is he is very good with a glove and plays second base and left field. He has a career .989 fielding percentage and he would be a good backup for outfielder Ben Revere and infielders Cliff Pennington and Luis Valbuena.

It is definitely a good thing for the Angels to get Ackley on their team, whether they need someone to come in to replace a player, or just to add another left-handed bat to keep the pitcher honest, Dustin Ackley will most likely be their guy. I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait to find out how he will be used if he makes the cut in the 2017 Spring Training.
